NAACP: Expel college students for racist graffitiNAACP: Expel college students for racist graffitiThe Associated Press Wednesday, November 12, 2008 RALEIGH, N.C — The North Carolina NAACP wants North Carolina State University to expel four students accused of painting racist messages about President-elect Barack Obama on campus. N.C. State Chancellor James Oblinger held a closed-door meeting Wednesday with NAACP President Rev. William Barber to discuss the graffiti found on the campus' free expression tunnel. Barber wants an official response from the university within 48 hours. Oblinger said after the meeting that both sides have "agreed to move forward." Four students admitted spray-painting the messages, including one that said "Let's shoot that N----- in the head." Their names haven't been released. Have you ever seen the tunnel????? It is placed there with the blessing of the school to be used for such expression. This isn't the first comment sprayed there that could be deemed offensive to many. Why is it being made a issue of this one expression. |

I am not racist, but calling someone a racist name is not illegal. Just because you call me racist, you should not kicked off the forum for calling me demeaning names, just like the kids calling someone a n---- is not a crime, nor is it a hate crime, and they should not be kicked out of school. Anyway, do you know if that is what was written? |

Sure, people are free to be racist if they wish, but do something for me, try saying "n-----" at work, at church, tell your kids to exercise their free speech on campus by calling a black man a "n-----" in class! When you are fired from your job, asked to leave your church, and your kid is expelled please come and argue about free speech again. Obviously you have no common sense, just like the idiots who sprayed it in the first place, on this matter. You seem to defend racists a lot in your posts, but then insist you aren't one yourself. Funny. Also, did you even read your own post? I know that's what they sprayed because that's what the article said! Are you serious? I do not go around calling people racist names, but, again, calling someone a racist name is not illegal as long as it is not threatening. Racism works both ways, you know? How many times have you heard Chris Rock call whites, "crackers", "honkeys", etc.., but you cannot call a black person a "n---" even I won't post on here, because blacks will get bent out of shape, but it is okay for them? |

Chris Rock is a comedian, I have Dvds of white comedians who say "n-----," chinese comedians who say "cracker," yada yada... Comedians make money being "shocking." The difference is, they're COMEDIANS. It's comedy, they're making us laugh at our own prejudices. The people who sprayed their "free speech" on the wall were motivated by hate. They threatened violence, and they should be expelled, if not arrested. Like I've said in an older post in which you were again defending racist behavior because "reverse racism exists," just because the NAACP and Jesse Jackson go on "racism" witch hunts and sometimes are guilty of "reverse racism" doesn't justify other racist behavior. Two wrongs don't make a right. Stop defending hate, dude. Also, you shouldn't call someone a "n-----" because it's wrong, not because "the blacks will get bent out of shape." |

Having went there, I have seen all sorts of vile $%^& on that wall. Gruesome sayings, swastikas, white hate. Pictures were painted of people and/or school mascots being shot, hung, etc. It is always painted over by students who disagree with it in short order. This is no different from anything else. It was deemed to not be a crime, and the 4 came forward VOLUNTARILY to admit they did it and apologize for their actions to the school. This was investigated by RPD, NCSU, and the damn Secret Service and no charges were filed. To then crucify them for something that is tasteless, but not illegal and counter to the spirit of the Free Expression Tunnel.
I guess we should name it the "Free Expression as long as it doesn't offend a minority Tunnel." |

Agreed, knowing this place as I do, no one has any room to comment or be suspended by any actions painted on it. Not saying the guys were correct in their doings either...........the naacp just needs to sit down and quit making issues out of nothing. |

Yes I have seen anti-homosexual, anti-semitical, and racist crap on there from all sides. But if its the FREE EXPRESSION and nobody is saying "I'm going to kill Chancellor Oblinger on 11/29/08 in his office with a large machete." I'm not sure how KILL BUSH and DIE BUSH DIE etc. is allowed for the last 8 years, but comments on Obama aren't. | ||||

AMEN See that's what I'm opposed to is the double standard. Personally I think the individuals should be taken out behind somewhere and well you know the rest. But to expel them because of this, when so many other deeming things were painted/written sends me off the deep end. |

I'll give you guys that one. If "let's shoot bush" was written on the wall, then the school should show the same standard for them as well.
That doesn't change the fact that the students we were talking about were wrong, and should be punished. Like I've said time and time again, you guys seem to think just because the NAACP/jesse jackson/whoever obviously is guilty of reverse racism at times, it justifies other people(and you) being racist. That is absolutely wrong. |

For me it all boils down to applying the same standard. Yes there should be some punishment, but expulsion for either phrase in a sanctioned expression tunnel is a little over the top. |

Its been like that for years with no problems, so I'm not sure why it should be changed now. Nobody has really given a damn what people put in there, because as on most college campuses, you have extremes from all sides together on campus expressing their ideas. I personally would rather see that then other expressions elsewhere on campus or perpetrated on people instead of a wall.
And if a rule/law is passed on the campus, then the idiots that put the Kill Obama crap up should not be prosecuted under a law that was never on the books at the time. |

Threatening to shoot someone is not protected speech even in a "free expression" tunnel. I'm surprised that the Secret Service didn't press charges just to make a statement that it wasn't acceptable. | ||||

I totally agree with this statement !!! During the past few weeks, my entire family has heard some stupid racist comment at one time, or the other. My daughter was coming out of Food Lion last week when this young black man got right in her face & said " Obamaaaaaaaa is in now, he should put you whiteys in the fields". My other daughter who indeed did vote for Obama was told by several co-workers that they didn't care who was running they were voting for the black man anyways. I am going to HCC & there was plenty said there that could be described as racist comments towards whites in class & out. Am I going to lump all african americans into being racists because of those comments ?? No. Anyone can be a racist....all it takes is a small & empty mind. The punishment should be the same for all no matter their race, or gender. |

Here is a good example of the same thing..............the guy that had the Sarah Palin look-a-like hanging from the tree.......he was issued a firm warning and told to take it down. The guys that hung the obama doll at the college were charged with all kind of crimes, arrested, and will be prosecuted. | ||||

Yeah, the NAACP is getting tiresome to me. But then they are objecting because the statement was racist, so they don't want the students expelled over the violent part?
I know someone who got kicked out for a semester or two because he was cheating. According to him, he didn't have anything on the calculator but a temperature conversion program. But then it didn't help when he called the folks at the hearing a bunch of four letter words. |
