Don't buy gas at Texaco stations

Prepare yourselves for a rant, I'm still pretty angry about this.

Today I stopped at a Texaco station to buy some gas, I went inside to use my card, since it doesn't ever work at pumps.

I asked for $10 of gas and the girl behind the register slid my card and handed me my receipt. Imagine my surprise when the subtotal read: $100.00.

I handed the receipt back and told her there must be a mistake, I only needed $10.00. She replied that it was perfectly fine, it was a new policy, instead of putting the exact amount that you need through, they simply "approve" your pump for "up to $100.00" and it only takes as much as you pump.

After a few more questions where she assured me I would only be charged what I pumped, I pumped my gas and left.

Sure enough, when I stopped by an ATM, it showed that $100 had been withdrawn from my account.

I rode back to the Texaco, and this time there was a manager present. After the manager looked through the receipts, she told me that it is indeed just a new thing that Texaco is doing, and that the $100 won't be charged, just the $10.

I showed her my bank receipt that showed the $100.00 being withdrawn and she said "The money goes into holding when we authorize the pump."
So I asked why I didn't get the money I didn't charge back, since I needed it for bills today, it was really a big inconvenience.

She replied that the money would be returned to my account within three business days!! But that if I wanted it returned sooner I would have to go to my bank and have them call the Texaco main office to cancel the charge.

Can you believe that?

So if you don't want $100.00 of your money tied up in a holding account for 3 days, I'd advise you to steer clear of Texaco. I know I won't be returning.

Which one was it, was it a new dixie mart here in town? They tried something like this one time before, but it just authorized your card for up to $100 at prepay, and you couldn't pump over that amoun twith-out doing 2 transactions. If its the case with my money.....I'll go to Hess or elsewhere and buy fuel, I buy gas from them every single day almost in one of the vehicles, so if I tied up as much as $700 in charges tied up in a holding account I might be in trouble......I keep a little in my checking to get by on every week, but thats crazy.

It was the drive-thru gas station on 10th street next to Bojangles.

According to the employee it's a new "Texaco policy" though.

jeezs!
rrnclisten

thats ridiculous if not illegal... i would talk to the Attorney General's office in Raleigh...

I agree.  It sounds illegal to me.  They are making interest on your money for those three days.  It doesn't sound like much but multiply it by tens of thousands of like transactions.  They've got quite a nice little slush fund going on there.  It's hard to believe it is their policy.  Sounds extremely counter-productive.

I wonder if somone used a debit card with less than $100 dollars available could they buy gas from Texaco?
doomster

^ yeah if everyone did it, I'd be broke in a day, all I use is my debit card, I never carry cash, and never means...........I pay everything with my card or either set it up on bank draft or bill pay. I don't even own a checkbook, something else to worry about one stealing.

Thats a good question??

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the whole situation "stinks."
I was not a happy camper. Laughing

Have you thought about the possibility that the cashier was planning to scam you and take $90.00 and put it in her pocket. Lots of people don't bother to look at the receipt or their statement when it comes. If she did that to a hundred people and hauled ass before things got hot she could make out pretty good!

Well, the manager confirmed what the cashier had said to me earlier, so I doubt that was the situation. Laughing

Hmmmm . . . wonder if they need any help at the ole Texaco?

That wouldn't  be very smart... there's not a very long paper trail for that sort of thing... I knew a few people who did that waiting tables... so you better double check those too!! But you'd have to be stupid to do a thing like that.

With the crack-heads in today's times working part time jobs taking cash..........I don't trust anyone. Check your reciepts all the time!!!!

I'd call the credit card company and tell them this story and see what they have to say about it. Let's say for example that you were near your credit limit but knew you could charge 10 bucks and be ok. But the Texaco puts a 100 dollar charge on it and runs you over the limit. Now you will have to deal with an over limit fee and your interest rate will skyrocket to 2 trillion percent and you will be denied credit everywhere you go, get kicked out of your apartment, and end up having to rent from Jim Garrett! Oh God!!!!

Damn man, now you are screwed.............LOL!!

I doubt it is a texaco policy, it is more likely the owner's policy.
doomster

That station is owned by new dixie oil co, call their main office tomorrow.
Kim

OMG !!! Thanks for bringing this to our attention, believe me there are times when my checking goes below $ 100.00 & I do not need my damned $$$ being tied up, much less acruing fees.  I used to stop at that station quite a bit due to the fact I work nearby, well no more.
I will stick with Murphy.

Oh WOW! Been there, done that and it sucks.
I went to the BP out there past William R. Davie and got 10.00 in gas. Went home and checked my bank account and 90.00 extra was gone. I FREAKED OUT.

Called the store, talked to the manager, and called New Dixie.

The exact words were " It was their new policy"

I almost fainted. FORGET THAT. No more debits for me at ANY New Dixie stores.

They said it's too guarantee their funds, but taking extra of my funds doesn't cut it.

Thank you for sharing! Obviously this isn't just a fluke or one time thing.

I'm going to contact someone about whether this is entirely legal or not.
Kim

Does anyone know if this includes the BP stations too? I get gas from the Family Fare BP by HCC quite a bit on my way to/from class.
I sure don't need my $$$ tied up for days.

Thanks, Kim
doomster

kim, I don't think new dixie ows that station, so you might be ok there.
The Rock

I don't see how this practice can be considered legal.  I'm familiar with the bill showing up on your account for 1.00 for a couple of days and then the actual amount shows up, but putting 100.00 charges on people's accounts is rediculous.  How long before they try to let one slide and leave it on somebody's account, hoping they won't notice it?

Glad to see you can log into your account again Rock Smile
Kestrel

That's why I don't use my debit card anymore and stick with the credit card.
