Back Taxes

Jon, I realize this isn't exactly in your control or your exact department, but you might can shed some light on it. I also have heard several others comment on this issue as well.

A week and some change back there was a article in the daily herald that named the individuals that owed back taxes, some of those names were pretty big on the list with current ongoing projects. The question came up at the avenue round table this week.......how can these folks continue to do business inside town with new projects when they can't even keep up with several years of back taxes owed? Do you think its fair to deny future building permits to these folks?

I think it is not fair at all to continue to let projects go forward when back taxes are owed. We have talked about this with the city manager before, and it is not legally possible to deny a building permit for back taxes. I would like to find a loophole that would let us have more leverage to collect these taxes, but we have not found it yet.

Pity one can't add the back taxes to the building permit fee, and then deny the permit when the complete fee is not paid.

If some of the folks do business with the city, and get payments, perhaps the back taxes could be deducted from their payment. Gee, you mowed the lawn, but you owed us money, so you did it for free.
