This will be my last season with the Recreational league with RVYSA. I'm tired of getting coaches with no experience; for the $80 I pay for my child to play soccer (supposedly to learn the fundamentals) I expect my child to actually be taught the fundamentals. They need to insist on trained coaches or lower their fees.
Goodbye RVYSA, hello Lake Gaston Baptist Church!
Disclaimer: Not ALL of my coaches have been worthless, I'd say after having two kids play for several years I've had three coaches who knew the game and knew how to coach.
You get about 20 games or so and a shirt and matching socks. It isn't about the number of games, it's about your child being taught the fundamentals of the game. So much emphasis is put on small sided play, smaller fields, no goalies and/or no scores being kept yet they assign coaches who know NOTHING about the game. How are the kids supposed to learn anything? My kid has played for 4 years now and he doesn't know the difference between the positions or how they're played (except for goalie and striker). The kids aren't taught how to work together as a team (and the few teams that are dominate the season). Players have been leaving RVYSA in droves, so much so they didn't have enough players to form a U9 league and they've had to combine them with the U11 league. I was called twice to coach last year; I explained to them that I have no experience with soccer and they didn't care, they were too desperate for coaches.
Now if you want your kid to learn the fundamentals you can pay an extra $50 to be on one of the Academy teams and travel every weekend. No thanks; if I'm going to travel it's going to be to Littleton.
Bumped for local interest purposes. Only one person out of all the people who post here are interested in local soccer and how it impacts the community?

Myself I could care less about soccer or someone complaining about what you get for your money or how bad the coaches are.
Everything in this world cost. As for coaches they are all volunteer and every league needs more volunteers everyday.
I saw this post but didn't really think my opinion was needed or wanted, but since you asked again there it is.
I've heard several others say similar things (some coaches being great and others not knowing a thing) but since mine aren't playing soccer, it wasn't much that I could add to this either.
I've had three play soccur here and we've had some good, some excellent and some not so good. For twenty bucks it is a bargain, cheap thrills for mom and dad, local games with your friends, church members and co-workers in attendance and the kids have great fun. They all did well however my daughter excelled in the girls league and wanted to try 'advancing' as she was invited to join an out of town coveted 'travelling team', spelled e-x-p-e-n-s-i-v-e. You travel all over the state for games, many times spending the night in hotels. The coaching is excellent of course their is a coach fee of $300.00 or more, plus you have to buy the uniform for $100.00. Practices are all out of town which you must be at or get cut. We're talking serious parents, 'stage mothers' all looking to have that superstar kid. Many of the parents were professionals, doctors, lawyers, realtors etc. I'll take the Rec league anyday. If you want all the bangs and whistles, well now, that'll cost you ma'am. And to tell you the truth, though the Rec lacks in pros we had more fun. _________________ "It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds."

Don't lose sight of the fact that it's a recreational league. You get what you pay for. My question is why doesn't the city run the recreational leagues for the kids? What do the tax dollars pay for? A pool? _________________ "Sometimes things are exactly as they seem."

I have been asking that very same question since I relocated back to RR. I got a another question, why when school is in session the REC is open, but when school is out it is closed? Wouldn't it make more sense to be open for business when your should be intended clients are actually able to attend?
If you didn't have an opinion you didn't have to comment. I just find it odd that this board is supposed to be about the Roanoke Valley yet when posts are made there's no interest. Should I take a cue from JH and SGL and suggest that the lack of responses was because most are too stupid or lazy to care about soccer?
RVYSA insists it's about teaching kids the fundamentals of soccer yet for the money I pay my kid isn't getting taught jack squat. I felt that was a valid complaint. To keep from losing more kids they need to either get their coaches trained or lower their fees. I realize the coaches are volunteers but don't advertise what you can't deliver. I only paid $20 for my kid to play flag football; I never expected him to learn every aspect of the game. I paid $20 for both of my kids to play basketball; I never expected either of them to come out of that season ready to play for the all-stars. In this economy there's a big difference between paying $20 and paying $80 (and getting $20 results for your $80).

May I ask were they played flag football and basketball?
